Home Care
Because plaque continues to form on teeth and gums, it is very important to remove
it daily. Proper flossing and brushing techniques are the first steps in periodontal
therapy. Without proper home care, periodontal disease may recur and worsen,
even with professional periodontal treatment.

Flossing cleans between teeth and under gums.
Brushing cleans front and back surfaces of teeth.
A. Flossing:
Doing this daily removes plaque from between the
teeth and below the gum-line, where brushing
cannot reach. Flossing must be done at least
once a day, using the type of floss recommended by your
dentist or periodontist.
B. Brushing:
Brushing removes bacterial plaque and stimulates
circulation in gum tissue.
We recommend a small, soft, angled tooth brush with
rounded bristles, and replace it whenever
it gets worn or frayed. Brush at least twice
a day, making sure to clean all surfaces thoroughly.

Gently brush toward the gum at a 45° angle. Use circular
or back-and-forth motions, but do not scrub.
Work the tip of your brush around the inner surfaces of your
teeth, including the teeth in back.

Clean the front and back surfaces of your teeth by using a
vibrating or jiggling motion with the brush.
After cleaning all the surfaces of your teeth and gums, brush
your tongue, then rinse well.
